DAVID LUIZ CLAIMS CHELSEA CAN STILL SAVE THEIR SEASON FROM DISASTER WITH EURO GLORY

Dailystar.co.uk 16/04/2013

"If you win the Europa League and play Champions League football next year of course it is a success."

Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City means the Blues now have only one trophy left to play for.

But Luiz, 25, reckons winning the Europa League and finishing in the top four would still make this a campaign to be proud of.

He said: “If you win the Europa League and play Champions League football next year ofcourse  it is a success.

“There are some big teams in Europe who don’t win titles this year for sure, so of course it is a success.

“This season I wanted to win everything. We are now in a position where we cannot win the league. But we can stay in the top four and try to win another European title, so we will work for that.”

Chelsea have been in the hunt for seven different trophies this season but now have just one to aim for.

That is quite a comedown for last season’s Champions League and FA Cup winners, who are also clinging on to fourth place in the Premier League.

City simply blew them away for long spells at Wembley but Luiz insists fatigue from Chelsea’s fixture pile-up played no part in their defeat.

He said: “It’s hard when you play a big game and don’t have the ball. It was an intelligent philosophy from City, who controlled the game with the ball.

“When you don’t have the ball, you cannot score goals. In the second half, the team played in the City half and tried to win.

“It is a disappointment but you can take positive things from this game. We did many positive things on the pitch.

“We didn’t start very well. They have some great players in the middle.

“But in the second half we woke up, showed our character  and created a lot of opportunities to score many goals.”
Luiz admitted he will also be asking  questions about himself ahead of tomorrow’s derby with Fulham.

He added: “I’m sad, I need to be honest with myself, see what I did well and what I did badly and improve for the future .”
